In the midsummer heat of July, the mountain city sweltered under rolling waves of heat. Yet in the waiting area of the Otolaryngology Department on the 3rd floor of Youyou Baby Women’s and Children’s Hospital, a different kind of coolness and warmth was quietly taking shape.
On July 23 and July 30, faculty and staff from KL International School came to the hospital and successfully held two sessions of the “KLIS Breeze of Care – Snow Leopard Creative Hand Fan DIY” interactive activities. We brought our school mascot, the snow leopard, and the educational warmth of KLIS to the children who needed care and companionship.
Warmth on the Fan: A Snow Leopard and Campus Impressions on Xuan Paper
To enhance the children’s experience, we carefully upgraded the activity materials to high quality xuan paper fans, which are well crafted and easy to color. On the front of each fan, we specially designed a “doctor version” of the snow leopard. Our mascot, which usually accompanies students on campus, was now dressed in a white lab coat, transforming into a little guardian angel of health. On the back, we printed the KLIS logo. This small xuan paper fan was not just a craft project; it was also a unique souvenir carrying the campus culture of KLIS.
Sincere Communication: Education Goes Beyond the Classroom
In this activity, our focus was not solely on the craft itself, but more importantly on genuine interaction with the children and their parents. Our teachers not only guided the children step by step in using the painting tools, but also crouched down to their level, offering caring words in soft tones:
“Sweetie, what’s bothering you today?”
“After the doctor checks you, you’ll feel better very soon.”
In the relaxed atmosphere of the craft session, teachers had in depth conversations with parents about parenting insights, explored children’s growth and educational inspiration together, and also shared little secrets about taking care of their bodies with the children. Through these authentic interactions, our teachers naturally infused the four core pillars of KLIS—Kindness & Knowledge, Learning & Leadership, Integrity & Innovation, and Self Awareness & Strength—into every moment of companionship and communication.
Fans as a Medium: Experiencing the Power of Education Through Interaction
During the hands on craft segment, light laughter often echoed through the waiting area. Watching their children proudly hold up the hand painted “Doctor Snow Leopard” fans with obvious delight, many parents remarked that such small interactions added a warm and comforting presence to their waiting time.
Though the “Breeze of Care” activity has come to a temporary close, KLIS’s exploration of holistic education and its commitment to accompanying children on their growth journey will never stop. Looking ahead, we look forward to more opportunities to bring our educational philosophy into real world community settings, and to walk hand in hand with parents and children, offering warmth and support every step of the way.
