KLIS PBL Teaching Achievements Exhibition

Friday 4th of December 2020 | Campus Life

Recently, a special "natural disaster" PBL teaching achievement exhibition kicked off in KLIS school. Crustal movement, snowstorms, tornadoes, earthquakes, tsunamis and other natural disasters have been simulated and restored one by one through the fantastic ideas and skillful production of children in grades 3-5.

Principal Mr.Dino listened to the project explanation with the children

In the exhibition activities, the children used fluent English and appropriate actions to introduce their projects to all teachers, students and parents in a clear and reasonable way from the aspects of natural disasters, causes of disasters, possible hazards and preventive measures.

In the "Continental Drift" exhibition group, the two students first briefly described the information they collected about the background, evolution process and formation reasons of the "Continental Drift" with PPT. Then, they put the bread slices next to the syrup and then heated the syrup. In the process of heating the syrup, the bread slices were separated from each other, visually showing the appearance of "Continental Drift".

In the "Blizzard" exhibition group, the children made a blizzard experience area. The fan blew up a huge transparent plastic bag, which was covered with a layer of white artificial snow powder. When the wind became stronger, the artificial snow powder swirled everywhere, creating a snowstorm scene.

This PBL project is aimed at students in grades 3-5. Starting from September, the project officially started. During the two-month study period, the teacher first told the children the concept of "natural disaster" and let the children determine the theme by themselves through grouping. Then, the teacher collected data on the Internet, determined the form of expression, selected the production materials, made the model by hand, and finally displayed the results.

"Children are the main players in the whole learning process. Teachers only give advice at critical moments and are learning promoters." Ms.Tara said that in a relaxed and active learning atmosphere, the children spoke freely and worked together. They not only learned relevant knowledge, but also cultivated creative thinking, critical thinking, information screening ability, teamwork ability and interpersonal communication ability.

PBL (Project Based Learning) refers to one or more real-world problems, allowing students to explore the problems and propose solutions to the problems in an individual or team way. In this process, students will systematically learn the multidisciplinary knowledge needed to solve this problem and skillfully master the digital technical means needed to solve this problem. In the end, the students presented the solution through works. It may take two weeks, two months or even longer to complete a PBL project, and the whole process is a "learning by doing" process.

KLIS has always adhered to the characteristics of PBL teaching, and this demonstration of PBL teaching results for "natural disasters" is also a test of phased learning results. Ms.Tara said that the next new PBL project is about to start. KLIS children's study will involve sociology, mathematics and other knowledge. At that time, the children will be displayed in a real wax museum.
